AP: Senate, House Budget Surplus Grew To $172 Million; Spend More Than Last Year

On February 4 the Associated Press reported, the Senate and House Legislative Audit Advisory Commission released their annual report showing a $172 million surplus in their operating accounts as of July 1, 2019.
The Senate and House surplus has grown from $95 million in 2017 to $138 million in 2018 to the present $172 million.  In 2006 the surplus was $215 million.
The Senate and House spent $362 million, up from $355 million in 2018, to support the operations of 253 House and Senate members.
The biggest expense, by far, was payroll and benefits, which cost slightly over $299 million.
